Using the CANDLES method to whiten your tile joints
Even newly laid tile can begin to show black marks within just a few days. Luckily, by using the correct tools, you can whiten those stains without too much fuss.
By routinely cleaning your tile, you can prevent the formation of cracks and decay. It is best to avoid these issues because they lead to water leaks and consequently the discoloration of the tiles.
How to get started
You can get the grout between your tiles clean just by using a white candle. The wax from the candle also forms a protective barrier along the surface.
First, clean the tile and grout normally, making sure surface is completely free of dust. Now let it dry. Next, take your white candle and rub the tip along the lines of grout. Make sure you leave an even film along the tile joints, this will help prevent the build-up of dirt in the future.
If you find any traces of limescale or soap scum, you may want to consider using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar as well. Don’t hesitate to use this cleaning method before applying the candle technique described above.
Another trick to getting rid of black stains is using toothpaste. If you are facing just a couple of small stains, applying toothpaste with an old toothbrush will do just fine before applying the candle method.
However, if there is a fairly large amount of surface area covered in stains, we will have to resort to another method: a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. By mixing these two ingredients, you will end forming a paste that you can apply along the channels of grout. Let the paste sit for about 5 minutes, then rinse it away with water.
Difficult stains
Another solution for stubborn dirt on your tile is white wine vinegar paired with baking soda. Mix 10cl of vinegar with 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Now use a small brush to apply the solution along the tile joints. Finally, rinse and dry.
If you are looking at an extreme case of dirt build-up, you may want to use a mixture consisting of 1/3 ammonia and 2/3 water. Again, use a small brush to apply the mixture. Then rinse and dry. Remember, it is advisable to use gloves and a mask when working with ammonia. Also make sure the room is well-ventilated.
