Benedetta Rossi’s cold method to prepare soap at home
If you decide to make your own soap at home, you must first know that you can use different oils and fats. Many people choose olive oil, especially if they make it at home too. Olive oil is excellent for the skin and has an entirely natural composition. If you use olive oil, there’s no need to add any fragrance since the oil itself will provide a pleasant scent to the soap mixture.
Everything you need:
For the preparation of our soap, you will need some specific tools that are dedicated to this activity. In particular:
- Silicone spatula
- Gloves
- Protective goggles
- Precision scale
- Die
- Knife
The ingredients are as follows:
- 300 g of water
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1 kg of olive oil
- 128 g of caustic soda
- 20 ml of lavender essential oil
Method
Before you start, remember to wear gloves and goggles when handling caustic soda. Use three separate containers for water, soda, and oil. You must slowly pour the soda into the container with water (never do it the other way around!). Stir the mixture until it turns transparent and heats up to around 194 degrees Fahrenheit (or 90 degrees Celsius). Next, add this mixture to the container with oil and blend them together using a mixer until you achieve a creamy consistency. Finally, add the starch and lavender essential oil.
Now, pour the mixture into molds and let it solidify for 24 hours. After this time, the block of soap can be cut into bars, placed on a surface, and left to dry for 30 days, turning them from time to time. After a month, your soap bars will be ready to use.
