The Reason for Putting Walnuts in Boiling Water
Not only do walnuts taste great, but they are also very good for our health. The dried nut contains many nutritious properties that include fiber, omega-3, and other minerals. Walnuts are great for the nervous system, and they can even act as a sedative when we have trouble sleeping. With all the uses the walnut can have in the kitchen, the only problem is the nut’s hard shell. And this is why we are going to discuss the importance of boiling walnuts.
The Method of Boiling Walnuts
The main reason for boiling walnuts is to soften their shells. This will result in a lot less work when trying to get them open. And the process is quite simple. Bring a pot full of water to a boil, then add your walnuts. Let the nuts boil for about five minutes before turning off the heat. Let the walnuts cool, and you will see how much easier it is to open the shells.
If time is an issue, we also have another method. You can also fill a large bowl with water along with your walnuts. Now, just place the bowl in the microwave and heat it up until the water starts boiling. The effect should be exactly the same as our first method. You can also place the walnuts in the oven for about five minutes to get a similar result.
Often, after we have shelled our walnuts, we find that the meat doesn’t come off very easily. When this is the case, all we need to do is let the kernels sit in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes, and the meat should be easily detached. You can also place your pieces of walnut in the microwave and heat for a few seconds, and the result should be exactly the same.
