The Trick to Wash and Dry Sweaters Correctly
To wash and dry sweaters correctly, without risking damage, it is advisable to be aware of their characteristics. Some types, such as those made of pure wool, are quite delicate. In some cases, it would be appropriate to treat them by hand.
The right treatment for washing and drying wool sweaters
When using a washing machine for sweaters, opt for the “delicate” program to preserve their condition. Then, select a suitable detergent, considering the variety available on the market. As for fabric softener, it would be preferable to use something other than industrial products for sweaters as they may accumulate between fibers, leading to a slower drying process and can release unpleasant odors over time.
It’s much better to try a 100 percent natural solution consisting of:
- 1 liter of water
- 150 grams of citric acid
- 10 drops of essential oil as desired.
When washing woolen items in the machine, it’s advisable to avoid spinning. And, if you really can’t avoid it, be cautious about the spin speed, as higher speeds can be harsh on delicate fabrics. It’s best to remove them immediately after washing and wring them out by hand with gentle care.
Now it’s time to dry the sweaters, which always takes a little time, longer than other garments. Lay them flat on a drying rack, perhaps wrapped in a terry towel to absorb excess water. If the towel becomes too wet, consider changing it during the drying process.
If the weather is dry, you can place the sweaters outside, still laying them flat. However, if you need to dry them indoors because it’s raining outside, position them on a drying rack near a radiator or stove. Opt for a room where you can open the windows to let out the humidity that is created.
